Ari Temkin on why the Cowboys shouldn’t extend Dak Prescott this offseason. Even though Prescott is arguably a top 15 QB in the NFL, and is therefore in line for a pretty significant payday, the Cowboys can hit Dak with the franchise tag next season and it would still be a cheaper deal than many of the deals that are projected for Prescott. Why would the Cowboys pay Dak $27-$30 million annually, when they can franchise tag him next season and pay $30 for Dak over the next two seasons.
Ari suggests the Cowboys take back the leverage by hitting Dak with the franchise tag during the 2020 offseason, and then drafting a QB in the first round of the draft in April 2020. That way they can take back the leverage from Dak Prescott.
