The Mavericks are way ahead of schedule in terms of their development and seem to think it’s time to trade Dennis Smith Jr. Why? Cause he’s an older, less talented version of soon to be rookie of the year, Luka Doncic.
Don’t take my word for it, that came from rival team execs. And yes, we understand they play different positions.
Dennis Smith Jr was the 9th pick overall by the Mavericks in 2017. Made the All-Rookie second team and is off to a pretty good start in 2018. The problem is he doesn’t seem to gel well with Luka.
At 21 years old, it’s hard to quit on the guy. He too is trying to prove himself in the NBA. His time on the court has dropped below 23% and assists are down by the same number.
With the Mavericks exploring his trade value before the deadline, I’d imagine there will be quite a bit of interest and wouldn’t be overwhelmingly disappointed if they find the right deal.
Suns, Knicks, and Spurs are the leading trade candidates. Names like Frank Nitilkina and DeMar Derozen have been floated.
However, Mavs fans feel differently about it.
Should the Mavericks trade Dennis Smith JR?
We are asked our Facebook fans if they would trade him:
Twitter wanted to weigh in too. Seems more people than not are not please with the idea. Though many weren’t completely against it.

What would you like to see happen with Dennis Smith Jr, Luka Doncic, and the 2018-2019 Mavericks.
What trade package do you think would be worth pulling the trigger?
